Culture & Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit
Zimbabwe has a subtropical climate with three seasons: a dry cool season (May-August), a dry hot season (September-November), and a wet season (December-April). The dry season is best for wildlife viewing in Hwange National Park and elsewhere, with animals gathering at waterholes. September-October can be extremely hot but offers the best wildlife sightings. Victoria Falls is most impressive during high water (February-May) when the spray can obscure views, while low water (September-December) allows walking on rock formations and better photo opportunities. Mana Pools is spectacular during the September-October dry season.
Cultural Notes
Zimbabwe has endured severe economic and political turmoil, including hyperinflation that made the currency worthless (100 trillion dollar notes exist as souvenirs) and the Mugabe era that ended in 2017. Despite hardships, Zimbabweans are resilient, educated, and welcoming. Great Zimbabwe ruins represent a sophisticated pre-colonial civilization that challenges colonialist narratives about African history. Shona people form the majority, with Ndebele in the south. Traditional beliefs in ancestral spirits coexist with Christianity. Zimbabwean culture has produced internationally renowned literature and music. Land reform remains a sensitive topic. The country is working to rebuild tourism and its reputation. Many Zimbabweans have emigrated, creating a large diaspora.
Insider Tips
Zimbabwe offers Victoria Falls (shared with Zambia), excellent safari experiences, and ancient Great Zimbabwe ruins. Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya, "The Smoke That Thunders") is one of the worlds largest waterfalls - the Zimbabwean side offers more viewpoints, the Zambian side allows closer approach. Hwange National Park has one of Africas largest elephant populations. Mana Pools allows walking safaris with remarkable wildlife encounters. The US dollar has been the effective currency since hyperinflation destroyed the local currency, though new ZiG currency is being introduced. ATMs are unreliable; bring sufficient US cash in good condition. Infrastructure has declined but is improving. English is widely spoken. Safety has improved significantly since political transitions.
