Culture & Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is from October to December when weather is pleasant and dry. Spring (March-May) is also good. Summer (June-September) is hot, humid, and has typhoon risk. Avoid Chinese holidays when casinos are extremely crowded.
Cultural Notes
Macau has a unique blend of Chinese and Portuguese cultures from 400+ years of colonial rule (returned to China in 1999). The Historic Centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with baroque churches and Chinese temples side by side. Macanese cuisine is a distinctive fusion. The Senado Square area showcases this heritage.
Insider Tips
Cantonese and Portuguese are official languages; Mandarin and English widely spoken. The Macanese Pataca (MOP) is the currency; Hong Kong Dollars accepted everywhere at 1:1. Macau is the "Vegas of Asia" but also has UNESCO World Heritage Portuguese colonial architecture. Easily combined with Hong Kong.
