Culture & Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

Luxembourg has a temperate oceanic climate with mild temperatures and rainfall spread throughout the year. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn (May-September) when parks and the picturesque old town are at their best. Summer (June-August) brings pleasant temperatures (20-25ยฐC/68-77ยฐF) and numerous outdoor festivals. The National Day on June 23rd features celebrations and fireworks. Autumn offers beautiful foliage in the Ardennes region and wine harvest festivities along the Moselle. Winter is cold and gray but Christmas markets from late November bring festive atmosphere to the capital.

Cultural Notes

Luxembourg is a grand duchy, one of few remaining in the world, with the Grand Duke serving as head of state. Despite its tiny size, Luxembourg plays an outsized role in European affairs - its the seat of several EU institutions and a major banking center. The population of 660,000 includes about 47% foreigners, one of the highest percentages in Europe, creating a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Luxembourgish, a Germanic language, unites the natives, though French dominates business and government. The history of foreign rule (Spanish, French, Dutch) and two World War occupations have created a pragmatic, multilingual society. Quality of life is among the worlds highest, with excellent healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

Insider Tips

Luxembourg is one of the worlds smallest countries but compensates with charming medieval fortifications, excellent museums, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere driven by EU institutions and banking. The capital, Luxembourg City, is built on dramatic gorges with the UNESCO-listed old town (Grund) below the fortified upper city. The Bock Casemates, underground tunnels carved into rock, are fascinating to explore. The Moselle Valley offers wine tasting at affordable prices. Public transportation became completely free in 2020, making getting around easy. Luxembourg uses the Euro. Three official languages (Luxembourgish, French, German) reflect the countrys position at European crossroads. Prices are high but the quality of life matches.
