WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate digital payments in China; international credit cards have very limited acceptance outside 5-star hotels, international airports, and major international retailers. Link your foreign bank card to WeChat Pay through the WeChat app before or on arrival (follow the international card binding process within WeChat). ATMs at Bank of China, ICBC, and China Construction Bank accept international cards for RMB cash withdrawals with a foreign card fee.

China is very safe for tourists. Crime rates are low, and violent crime against tourists is extremely rare. South Africans should be aware that China's extensive surveillance infrastructure (CCTV cameras with facial recognition, phone data monitoring) means privacy expectations are different from South Africa. Exercise caution with political speech and social media posts about China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Tibet while in China; foreigners have occasionally been questioned. Standard travel precautions apply.
