Malaysia has become one of the most sought-after destinations for Russian travelers since 2022. The country maintains a neutral political stance that has not affected Russian visitors, while offering a combination of English-friendly infrastructure, a warm climate, and a cost of living that allows for a comfortable lifestyle at a fraction of European prices. A one-bedroom apartment in Kuala Lumpur runs USD 400-550 per month outside the center, street food is plentiful and cheap, and the banking system remains workable for Russians through UnionPay cards and cash exchange.

KL has developed a noticeable Russian and Eastern European expat presence, particularly in the Mont Kiara and Bangsar neighborhoods, where co-working spaces, Russian-speaking services, and long-stay apartments have multiplied. Many who arrived in 2022-2023 have stayed, working remotely or building local businesses.

Direct flights between Russia and Malaysia remain suspended as of early 2026, though both governments announced interest in restoring air links in late 2025. Travelers currently connect through Istanbul, Dubai, Doha, or Tashkent, with total journey times of 12-18 hours. All visitors must complete the MDAC pre-arrival registration online before departure, a free process that takes about 5 minutes.

The standard 30-day visa-free entry covers most visits, but Russian travelers staying longer or relocating have several options.

• DE Rantau Digital Nomad Pass: 12 months, renewable once. For remote workers earning USD 24,000/year (tech sector) or USD 60,000/year (non-tech). Fee approximately MYR 1,060 (~USD 225). Requires a criminal background check and health insurance.
• MM2H (My Second Home) Program: Long-term renewable pass requiring significant financial assets. Silver tier: USD 150,000 fixed deposit plus property purchase. Gold: USD 500,000. Platinum: USD 1,000,000. Passes valid 5-20 years depending on tier.
• Visa run: Exit to Singapore, Thailand, or Indonesia and re-enter for a fresh 30-day pass. Immigration officers have discretion and may question repeated entries.

Malaysia uses the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). For Russian travelers, the card situation is straightforward once you know what works.

UnionPay is the most reliable option, accepted at approximately 90% of ATMs in Malaysia, including Maybank, CIMB, Hong Leong Bank, Public Bank, and RHB. Russian-issued Mir cards do not work in Malaysia. Standard Visa and Mastercard issued by Russian banks have been blocked since March 2022.

For cash, bring USD or EUR and exchange at licensed money changers in major malls and city centers. Rates at money changers are significantly better than at airports. USD is the most liquid foreign currency for exchange in Malaysia.

Malaysia is a well-traveled destination for Russians, and logistics are generally smooth once you know what to expect.

• Heat and humidity: Malaysia is tropical year-round (30-33C, high humidity). March-April is the wettest period in KL; July-August is relatively drier. Carry water and wear lightweight clothing.
• Islamic country etiquette: Dress modestly at religious sites (cover shoulders and knees). Alcohol is available at licensed establishments but heavily taxed. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
• Grab app: Download Grab for ride-hailing, food delivery, and grocery. Far more reliable and affordable than street taxis.
• Affordable food: Street food is excellent and cheap (nasi lemak, roti canai, laksa from MYR 5-10). Night markets and hawker centers are the best way to eat well on a budget.
