Portugal to United Arab Emirates: What You Need to Know

The UAE grants visa-free entry to Portuguese citizens for stays of up to 30 days for tourism and business. Dubai is consistently among the world most visited cities, renowned for the Burj Khalifa (world tallest building), Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Mall, Deira gold and spice souks, and desert safaris. Abu Dhabi offers the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World, and access to the Empty Quarter desert. The UAE is also one of the world major aviation hubs through Emirates (Dubai) and Etihad (Abu Dhabi), making it a common stopover for long-haul travelers from Portugal to Asia and Australia. Direct flights from Lisbon to Dubai with Emirates and TAP take approximately 7 hours.

How to Get There

From Dubai, flights connect to over 240 destinations worldwide. Day trips between Dubai and Abu Dhabi (1.5 hours by bus or taxi) are easy. Oman is accessible by road (3-4 hours from Dubai to Muscat) or short flight. Qatar and Bahrain are short flights away. The UAE is a common refueling stop en route to Southeast Asia or Australia; Emirates and Etihad both offer stopovers in Dubai or Abu Dhabi at no extra airfare cost.

Money & Banking

The UAE uses the dirham (AED). Cards are accepted virtually everywhere; the UAE is highly cashless. ATMs are plentiful. The UAE is expensive at luxury level but mid-range travel is manageable: a meal in a non-hotel restaurant costs AED 40-80, while budget food courts in malls offer meals from AED 20. Dubai Mall food courts and supermarkets offer affordable options.

Practical Tips

Dubai Metro (Red and Green lines) covers major tourist areas including the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, and Dubai Marina. Buy a Nol card for transit. Uber and Careem are available for rides. Temperatures in summer (June to September) exceed 45C; visit in cooler months (October to April) if possible. Fridays are the holy day; some businesses open later. Alcohol is served in hotels, licensed restaurants, and bars in Dubai; in Abu Dhabi availability is similar. Emergency number is 999.
