Great news! Portugal passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa for tourism or business purposes. You can stay up to 30 days.

No visa required for stays up to 30 days arriving by air. On arrival, an arrival card must be completed (or completed digitally via the Thailand Digital Arrival Card system). Carry proof of onward travel (return or connecting flight) as immigration officers may request it. A valid Portuguese passport with at least 6 months validity is required. For stays beyond 30 days, a 30-day extension can be obtained at any Thai immigration office for THB 1900. Alternatively, apply for a 60-day tourist visa at a Thai consulate before departure.

Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Thailand: What You Need to Know

Thailand grants visa-free entry to citizens of Portugal and most EU countries for stays of up to 30 days per arrival (land border entries are limited to two per year; air entries are unlimited). Thailand is Southeast Asia most visited country, famous for Bangkok temple districts, northern hill tribes in Chiang Mai, pristine islands including Koh Samui, Phuket, and Koh Lanta, world-class street food, and affordable luxury travel. Flights from Lisbon to Bangkok typically connect through Doha, Dubai, or European hubs; total flight time is around 14-16 hours.

How to Get There

Thailand is an excellent base for exploring Southeast Asia. Direct flights from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang) connect to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. The overland route from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by overnight train is a classic experience. Ko Samui, Phuket, and Krabi are reached by domestic flight or bus-ferry combos from Bangkok.

Money & Banking

Thailand uses the baht (THB). ATMs are widely available but charge foreign card fees of THB 220 per withdrawal; withdraw larger amounts per transaction. Cards are accepted in hotels, malls, and many restaurants. Thailand is very affordable: street food meals cost THB 40-80, mid-range restaurant meals THB 150-300. Budget accommodation starts from THB 400 per night.

Practical Tips

The BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro in Bangkok are efficient, clean, and air-conditioned; buy a Rabbit Card for BTS travel. Tuk-tuks are for short trips and should always be negotiated on price beforehand. Download the Grab app for metered taxis. Bargaining is expected in markets but not in malls or restaurants. Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees. Always carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Tap water is not safe; drink bottled water. Emergency number is 191 (police) or 1669 (ambulance).
