Portugal to South Africa: What You Need to Know
South Africa grants visa-free entry to Portuguese citizens for stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business, and transit. South Africa is the most visited country in sub-Saharan Africa and offers some of the world most spectacular safari experiences in Kruger National Park and private game reserves where the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) can be seen. Cape Town is consistently ranked among the world top cities, with Table Mountain, the Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach penguins, and the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek nearby. The Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is one of the world classic road trips. Flights from Lisbon to Johannesburg (OR Tambo) or Cape Town (with a stop) take approximately 10-12 hours on carriers including TAP, TAAG, and Airlink.
How to Get There
Cape Town to Johannesburg is a 2-hour domestic flight (FlySafair is the best-value domestic carrier). The Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth or Gqeberha can be driven in 3-7 days. Kruger National Park is near Johannesburg; most safari packages are 3-5 days with a private lodge or self-drive. From South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe (Victoria Falls), Botswana (Chobe, Okavango Delta), and Namibia are accessible for multi-country southern Africa trips.
Money & Banking
South Africa uses the rand (ZAR). Cards are accepted in cities, restaurants, and petrol stations. ATMs are plentiful. South Africa is very affordable for European travelers due to favorable exchange rates: a restaurant meal costs ZAR 120-300, accommodation from ZAR 500 for a budget guesthouse, and luxury safari lodges from ZAR 3000-8000 per person per night including meals.
Practical Tips
South Africa is a driving destination; rent a car (automatic recommended) for the Garden Route and Cape Peninsula. Drive on the left. Avoid driving after dark in rural KwaZulu-Natal or Limpopo. In Cape Town and Johannesburg, use Uber rather than hailing street taxis. Never leave valuables visible in parked cars. Cape Town is extremely safe in tourist areas; follow local advice on areas to avoid after dark. Currency exchange at Rand rates is favorable for Europeans. Emergency number is 10111 (police) or 112 (mobile).
