Portugal to Singapore: What You Need to Know

Singapore grants visa-free entry to Portuguese citizens for up to 90 days for tourism, business, and transit. As an EU member, Portugal benefits from Singapore commitment to open travel for European nationals. Singapore is a compact city-state of extraordinary efficiency, blending Malay, Chinese, Indian, and colonial British cultures. Attractions include Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands, Sentosa Island, the historic Chinatown and Little India districts, Hawker Centre food culture (inscribed on UNESCO intangible heritage list), and Changi Airport (consistently voted the world best airport). Flights from Lisbon to Singapore typically connect through Doha, Dubai, or Frankfurt; total journey time is around 14-16 hours.

How to Get There

Singapore is an excellent hub for Southeast Asia travel. Direct flights or short connections reach Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Bali (Denpasar), Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, and Jakarta. Malaysia is a 5-hour bus ride or 25-minute budget flight from Singapore. The Johor Bahru (Malaysia) crossing via causeway or second link is easy for day trips and cheaper accommodation. Indonesia Bintan and Batam islands are reached by ferry from Harbourfront.

Money & Banking

Singapore uses the Singapore dollar (SGD). Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Singapore is expensive by Southeast Asia standards but competitive with Western European cities. Hawker food is excellent value (SGD 4-10). Hotel accommodation ranges from SGD 80 for budget to SGD 300+ for mid-range. Supermarkets and convenience stores (7-Eleven, FairPrice) are affordable for snacks and drinks.

Practical Tips

Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is the easiest way to get around; buy an EZ-Link card or use contactless bank card tap-to-pay on the MRT and buses. Singapore is safe at all hours, making it excellent for solo travelers and families. Hawker centres such as Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat, and Old Airport Road offer outstanding food at SGD 4-8 per dish. Tap water is safe to drink. The Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay are free to enter (Cloud Forest and Flower Dome charge entry). Emergency number is 999.
