Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Philippines: What You Need to Know

The Philippines grants visa-free entry to Portuguese citizens for an initial stay of 30 days, which can be extended at any Bureau of Immigration office in the Philippines. Multiple extensions are possible, allowing stays of up to 36 months in total for tourists. The Philippines comprises over 7,600 islands with world-class dive sites (Tubbataha Reef, Apo Island), pristine beaches (Palawan, Siargao, Boracay), rice terraces (Batad, Banaue), and the vibrant capital Manila. The country has a strong historical connection with Spain (over 300 years of colonization) and the influence extends to Filipino surnames, Catholic culture, and place names, creating some cultural familiarity for Portuguese travelers with Iberian heritage.

How to Get There

Cebu is the main hub for Visayas island hopping, including Oslob whale shark watching, Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and Malapascua for thresher sharks. Siargao is the surfing capital. Palawan offers stunning karst landscapes and some of the world clearest water. Combine Philippines with Singapore, Malaysia, or Vietnam on a Southeast Asia circuit. Ferries connect Davao (Mindanao) to Cebu and Manila.

Money & Banking

The Philippines uses the peso (PHP). ATMs are widely available in cities and tourist areas; 7-Eleven ATMs reliably accept foreign cards. Cards accepted in hotels and larger restaurants. Very affordable: street food balot and pancit costs PHP 20-60, mid-range meals PHP 150-350. Accommodation in budget guesthouses from PHP 600, beach resorts from PHP 1500-3000 per night.

Practical Tips

Download the Grab app for reliable and metered transport in Manila, Cebu, and other cities. Jeepneys and tricycles are the local transport; agree on fare beforehand. The islands are best explored by air (Cebu Pacific, AirAsia Philippines, and Philippine Airlines offer cheap domestic fares) or by inter-island ferry for shorter routes. Palawan (El Nido, Coron) is reached by flight from Manila to Puerto Princesa or by direct flight to El Nido. Emergency number is 911.
