Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Netherlands: What You Need to Know

Portugal and the Netherlands share deep historical ties dating to the Age of Discovery, when Dutch and Portuguese traders competed in Asia and the Americas. Both countries are founding EU and Schengen members. Amsterdam is one of Europe most popular city-break destinations. The Netherlands also hosts a significant Portuguese community. Flights from Lisbon to Amsterdam Schiphol take about 2 hours 40 minutes; from Porto, around 2 hours 30 minutes. Direct routes are operated by TAP, KLM, easyJet, and Transavia.

How to Get There

From Amsterdam, Brussels is 2 hours by Thalys/Eurostar, Paris 3 hours 20 minutes, and London 3 hours 45 minutes by Eurostar via Brussels. Germany (Cologne) is under 3 hours by ICE train. Belgium and Luxembourg are within easy day-trip distance. From Lisbon, budget carriers including easyJet offer cheap direct routes to Amsterdam.

Money & Banking

The Netherlands uses the euro (EUR). Card payments are near-universal; the Netherlands is one of Europe most cashless societies. Amsterdam is expensive: budget EUR 120-200 per day for mid-range travel. Outside Amsterdam, cities like Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague are cheaper and offer excellent cultural attractions.

Practical Tips

Amsterdam public transport (GVB trams, metro, buses) uses an OV-chipkaart contactless card, or you can pay by contactless bank card directly on most transport. Cycling is the primary mode of transport; be alert to bike lanes, which have priority over pedestrians. The Netherlands is extremely flat and cycling infrastructure is exceptional. Carry an umbrella as rain can arrive suddenly. The Museumkaart (museum card) offers excellent value for frequent museum visits. Emergency number is 112.
