Portugal to Malta: What You Need to Know

Malta and Portugal are both EU and Schengen members using the euro; Portuguese citizens face no border controls or visa requirements. Malta is one of the world smallest and most densely populated countries, but packs in extraordinary historical depth: the prehistoric Ggantija temples (5500 years old, older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids), the medieval fortified capital Valletta (EU Capital of Culture 2018, UNESCO), the Knights of St John heritage, and the Three Cities. Gozo, Maltas smaller sister island, offers unspoilt rural landscapes and world-class cave diving at the Azure Window site. Malta is also a popular base for English language learning as English is an official language. Direct flights from Lisbon to Malta take approximately 3 hours on Ryanair and Air Malta.

How to Get There

From Malta, Sicily (Italy) is accessible by ferry from Valletta (Virtu Ferries, approximately 2 hours). Tunis (Tunisia) is a day ferry or short flight from Malta. Gozo is reached by a 25-minute ferry from Cirkewwa in northern Malta. Comino island (Blue Lagoon) is a short boat trip from Gozo or Cirkewwa.

Money & Banking

Malta uses the euro (EUR). Cards accepted widely. Malta is moderately priced: a restaurant meal EUR 15-30, Maltese pastizzi (savory pastries) EUR 0.50-0.80 each. Accommodation costs have risen in recent years due to high demand for English language schools and tourism.

Practical Tips

Malta is very small; most attractions are reachable by bus from Valletta or Sliema. The Tallinja bus card offers discounted fares. Rent a car for a day to explore Gozo. The Mdina (Silent City) medieval walled town is a highlight. Marsaxlokk fishing village has an excellent Sunday fish market. Diving conditions around Malta are excellent year-round; visibility is outstanding. Emergency number is 112.
