Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Latvia: What You Need to Know

Latvia and Portugal are both EU and Schengen members using the euro; Portuguese citizens face no border controls or visa requirements. Riga is the largest city in the Baltic states and has more Art Nouveau buildings than any other city in the world, concentrated in the Quiet Centre and Alberta street. The Riga Old Town is UNESCO-listed. Latvia also offers the white sand dunes of Jurmala beach resort (30 minutes from Riga), the Gauja National Park with medieval Sigulda castle ruins, and a deep amber and folk tradition culture. Flights from Lisbon to Riga with Ryanair take approximately 4 hours.

How to Get There

From Riga, Tallinn is 4 hours by bus. Vilnius (Lithuania) is 4 hours by bus. Sigulda (Gauja National Park) is 1 hour by train from Riga. The Baltic states circuit (Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius) is a popular 1-2 week itinerary best done by the Lux Express inter-capital bus service.

Money & Banking

Latvia uses the euro (EUR). Cards accepted widely; cash useful at markets. Latvia is affordable: a restaurant meal EUR 10-20. One of Europe best-value destinations alongside Lithuania and Estonia.

Practical Tips

Riga public transport (trams, trolleybuses, buses) uses an e-purse card or contactless bank card. The Central Market in Riga (housed in former German zeppelin hangars, UNESCO) is one of Europe largest and most atmospheric markets. The Jurmala beach resort is reached by Riga commuter train in 30 minutes. Latvian cuisine features rye bread, pork, smoked fish, and grey peas with bacon. Emergency number is 112.
