Iceland Visa RequirementsFor Portugal passport holders
Portuguese passport holders travel to Iceland visa-free under the Schengen Agreement. Iceland is a unique destination of volcanic landscapes, geothermal hot springs, and Arctic experiences.
Great news! Portugal passport holders can enter Iceland without a visa for tourism or business purposes.
No visa required for stays up to 90 days in the Schengen Area. Present your valid Portuguese passport or national ID card. Note: Iceland uses the Icelandic krona, not the euro. As an EU citizen, Portuguese nationals do not have automatic EU free movement rights in Iceland (which is not an EU member), but longer stays are governed by the EEA agreement which grants similar rights for employment and residence.
Iceland is part of the Schengen Area. Your stay counts toward the 90-day limit within any 180-day period for the entire Schengen zone. Learn more about Schengen rules โ

Current Travel Situation
Portugal to Iceland: What You Need to Know
Iceland is a Schengen member but not an EU member; Portuguese citizens still travel visa-free for up to 90 days under the Schengen Agreement. Iceland offers some of the most dramatic and otherworldly landscapes on Earth: the Golden Circle (Geysir, Gullfoss waterfall, Thingvellir National Park), the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, black sand beaches at Vik, the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, puffin colonies, whale watching, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis, best October to March). In summer, the midnight sun means 24 hours of daylight in June. Iceland is also one of the world safest countries. Flights from Lisbon to Reykjavik with Icelandair and Transavia take approximately 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours.
How to Get There
From Reykjavik, internal flights connect to Akureyri (north Iceland) and the Westfjords. In winter, Akureyri and Husavik offer excellent whale watching and Northern Lights opportunities. Snรฆfellsnes Peninsula (Snรฆfellsjokull glacier, Kirkjufell mountain) is a 2-hour drive from Reykjavik. Iceland is a popular stopover between Europe and North America on Icelandair routes.
Money & Banking
Iceland uses the Icelandic krona (ISK). Cards accepted everywhere; Iceland is highly cashless. Iceland is very expensive: a restaurant burger costs ISK 2500-4000, a beer ISK 1200-2000, a tank of petrol ISK 15000-20000. The Blue Lagoon costs ISK 9000-18000 depending on package. Budget carefully and consider self-catering with supermarket food.
Practical Tips
Renting a car is essential for exploring Iceland beyond Reykjavik and the Golden Circle. Drive on the right. Road conditions can change rapidly; check road.is daily. The Ring Road (Route 1) circles the entire island in approximately 7-10 days. Never drive off designated roads as this damages fragile volcanic moss and is heavily fined. Natural hot pots (geothermal pools) are free and scattered across the country. Bring waterproof outer layers as weather changes instantly. Emergency number is 112.
