Portugal to Hungary: What You Need to Know

Hungary and Portugal are both EU and Schengen members; Portuguese citizens face no visa requirements or border checks. Budapest is formed by the merger of historic Buda (with the Castle Hill, Fisherman Bastion, and Matyas Church on the western bank) and Pest (with the Grand Market Hall, St. Stephen Basilica, and the elegant Andrassy Avenue) divided by the Danube and connected by iconic bridges. Hungary is also famous for its thermal spa culture (Szechenyi, Gellert, Rudas baths), Tokaj wine region (UNESCO World Heritage), Lake Balaton, and the Puszta plains. Flights from Lisbon to Budapest take approximately 3 hours on Ryanair and WizzAir.

How to Get There

From Budapest, Vienna is 2.5 hours by train or the Railjet service. Bratislava (Slovakia) is 2.5 hours. Belgrade (Serbia) is 3.5 hours. Krakow (Poland) is reachable by overnight train. Lake Balaton, Central Europe largest lake, is 1.5 hours from Budapest by train and excellent in summer.

Money & Banking

Hungary uses the forint (HUF). Cards accepted in hotels, restaurants, and larger shops; cash useful for markets and smaller establishments. Hungary is one of Europe most affordable countries: a restaurant meal HUF 2500-5500, a beer HUF 600-1200. Budapest is excellent value for Western European travelers.

Practical Tips

Budapest Metro lines M1 (the second oldest on the European continent), M2, M3, M4 connect the city efficiently. A Budapest card covers transport and many museum entries. Thermal spas are a cultural institution: Szechenyi in City Park is the largest and most popular. Palinka (fruit brandy) is Hungary national spirit; sample it at a local bar. Ruin bars (romlokocma) in the Jewish Quarter of Budapest are world famous nightlife venues housed in crumbling buildings. Emergency number is 112.
