Great news! Portugal passport holders can enter France without a visa for tourism or business purposes.

No visa or pre-authorization is needed. Carry your valid Portuguese passport or national ID card (Portuguese citizens may use the national ID card for travel within the EU and Schengen Area). Your document must be valid for the duration of the stay. Note that ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is planned for EU citizens of non-EU countries but does NOT apply to Portuguese citizens, who are EU nationals and travel freely. Proof of accommodation and return travel may be requested at the border but is rarely checked for EU citizens.

France is part of the Schengen Area. Your stay counts toward the 90-day limit within any 180-day period for the entire Schengen zone. Learn more about Schengen rules โ†’

Portugal to France: What You Need to Know

Portugal and France are both founding members of the Schengen Area, meaning Portuguese citizens move freely between them as they would within the EU. The 90-day Schengen rule applies collectively across all 26 Schengen states, so time spent in Germany, Spain, Italy, or any other Schengen country counts toward the same 90-day allowance. France receives over 90 million tourists annually and has a large Portuguese community, particularly in Paris and the Ile-de-France region. Hundreds of thousands of Portuguese emigrated to France during the mid-20th century, and cultural and family ties remain very strong. Flights from Lisbon to Paris take about 2 hours 15 minutes; Porto to Paris runs slightly longer at around 2 hours 30 minutes.

How to Get There

France connects easily to neighboring countries. London is 2 hours 15 minutes by Eurostar from Paris. Brussels is 1 hour 20 minutes by Thalys/Eurostar. Amsterdam is 3 hours 20 minutes. Spain is reachable by TGV from Paris to Barcelona (about 6 hours). From Lisbon, direct flights to Paris, Nice, Lyon, and Marseille are plentiful and often cheap on TAP Air Portugal and budget carriers like easyJet and Ryanair.

Money & Banking

France uses the euro (EUR), the same currency as Portugal, so no exchange is needed. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Prices in Paris are higher than Lisbon; budget EUR 100-200 per day for mid-range travel. Outside Paris, costs drop considerably. Markets and boulangeries offer excellent value.

Practical Tips

Paris Metro tickets and the Navigo Dรฉcouverte weekly pass offer good value for city transport. The Museum Pass covers the Louvre, Versailles, and 50-plus other sites. Book Versailles well in advance as it sells out weeks ahead in summer. Tipping is optional: rounding up or leaving 10 percent for good service is appreciated. Pharmacies in France are marked by a green cross and are excellent for minor medical needs. Emergency number is 112.
