Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Finland: What You Need to Know

Finland and Portugal are both EU and Schengen members; no visa or border checks. Finland is the happiest country in the world according to the UN World Happiness Report (multiple consecutive years). Experiences unique to Finland include the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) in Lapland (best October to March), the midnight sun (June to July in Lapland), husky and reindeer safaris, authentic Finnish sauna culture, and the extensive lake district. Helsinki is a compact, walkable capital with excellent museums, design districts, and waterfront market. Direct flights from Lisbon to Helsinki take approximately 4 hours on Finnair and TAP.

How to Get There

From Helsinki, Tallinn (Estonia) is 2 hours by ferry. Stockholm is an overnight cruise away on Viking Line or Tallink. Saint Petersburg (Russia) was historically accessible by Allegro train but rail connections are suspended due to the 2022 Ukraine war. Within Finland, domestic flights from Helsinki to Rovaniemi (Lapland gateway, Santa Claus hometown) take 1 hour and are affordable.

Money & Banking

Finland uses the euro (EUR). Cards accepted virtually everywhere; Finland is among the most cashless societies in the world. Finland is expensive: restaurant meals EUR 20-40, a beer EUR 6-8. Lapland accommodation in peak Aurora season (December to March) books out months in advance; reserve early.

Practical Tips

Helsinki tram and Metro are efficient and run on a HSL travel card. Day trips from Helsinki to Tallinn (Estonia, 2-hour ferry) are very popular. Finnish sauna etiquette: nudity is standard in Finnish saunas; public saunas like Loyly or Allas Sea Pool welcome all visitors. Download the official Visit Finland app for Lapland Aurora forecasts. Emergency number is 112.
