Current Travel Situation

Portugal to Estonia: What You Need to Know

Estonia and Portugal are both EU and Schengen members using the euro. Estonia is the most northerly of the three Baltic states and is remarkable for its medieval capital Tallinn, with one of Europe best-preserved Old Towns (UNESCO), its extraordinary digital governance (Estonia was the first country to offer e-Residency and online voting), and its Baltic and Nordic natural landscapes. Tallinn Old Town, with its limestone towers, cobblestoned lower town, and Toompea hilltop upper town, is compact and very walkable. Lahemaa National Park and the island of Saaremaa offer nature escapes. Direct flights from Lisbon to Tallinn with Ryanair take approximately 3 hours 45 minutes.

How to Get There

From Tallinn, Helsinki is 2-2.5 hours by ferry. Riga (Latvia) is 4 hours by bus. St Petersburg (Russia) rail connections are suspended. The Baltic trio (Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius) is a classic circuit: take the Lux Express bus between capitals. Saaremaa island is 3 hours from Tallinn by bus and ferry.

Money & Banking

Estonia uses the euro (EUR). Cards accepted virtually everywhere; Estonia is a highly cashless, digital society. Prices are moderate: a restaurant meal EUR 12-25. Estonia is more affordable than Helsinki or Stockholm.

Practical Tips

Tallinn Old Town is compact and walkable; wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones. Tallinn Card covers transport and many museum entries. The ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki (Tallink, Viking Line) takes 2-2.5 hours and is popular for a day trip. Tallinn has excellent cafes and an increasingly strong restaurant scene; rye bread, black pudding, and smoked fish are local specialties. Emergency number is 112.
