North Korea to China: What You Need to Know
China is North Korea's principal ally and largest trading partner. The two countries share a 1,416 km border. Authorized North Korean citizens (officials, traders, students, and workers) can travel to China through official channels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, North Korea completely closed its borders including to China; borders have since been cautiously reopened. Unauthorized crossing of the border by ordinary North Korean citizens is treated as a crime by both countries.
How to Get There
Defectors who have escaped North Korea typically travel through China to third countries (Southeast Asia, Mongolia) before reaching South Korea or other destinations. This is an underground route with significant risks and no official authorization.

China is North Korea's primary source of trade, fuel, and hard currency. Most North Korean foreign trade transits through Chinese ports and banks. Since 2017, UN sanctions have significantly reduced the volume of sanctioned goods, but China-North Korea trade continues within permitted categories.
