Taiwan is one of Southeast Asia's most rewarding travel destinations: renowned night markets, dramatic mountain gorges, a sophisticated capital in Taipei, and a food culture that draws visitors from across the region. For Myanmar passport holders, a visitor visa is required, but the application process is accessible. Taiwan maintains a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Yangon, which handles visa applications directly for Myanmar nationals without the need to travel to Bangkok or another country.

The political context is worth a brief note. Taiwan and Myanmar, like most country pairs, lack formal diplomatic relations as Taiwan's international standing is complicated by the PRC's "one China" position. In practice, Taiwan conducts its foreign affairs through TECO offices rather than formal embassies, but the visa process itself is standard and well-established. Myanmar nationals are not subject to any specific travel restrictions or advisories from Taiwan.

The visitor visa fee is NTD 2,100 for a single-entry visa valid for stays up to 90 days. Processing at TECO Yangon typically takes 3 to 5 working days. Given the current conditions in Myanmar, including banking restrictions and passport issuance delays that have affected many travelers since 2021, applicants should allow extra time to gather required documents, particularly bank statements and employment proof.

If the Taiwan visa process is complicated by current conditions in Myanmar, or if you want to combine Taiwan with nearby destinations:

• Thailand (visa-free, 30 days): Myanmar passport holders can enter Thailand without a visa. Bangkok is a hub for connections throughout Asia and a worthwhile destination in itself. If you need to apply for a Taiwan visa outside Myanmar, TECO Bangkok is the closest alternative.
• Japan: Requires a visa for Myanmar nationals, applied at the Japanese Embassy in Yangon. Japan is a comparable East Asian destination with strong infrastructure and a well-developed tourism scene.
• South Korea: Also requires a visa for Myanmar nationals (Korean Embassy, Yangon). Korea is increasingly popular with ASEAN travelers and pairs well with a Taiwan trip given the proximity.
• China: Requires a visa via the Chinese Embassy in Yangon. Note that mainland China and Taiwan are entirely separate destinations with different visa systems.

Taiwan uses the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD / NT$). Cards are accepted at hotels, department stores, chain restaurants, and convenience stores, but smaller eateries, night market stalls, traditional markets, and rural areas are predominantly cash-based. Carry NTD for day-to-day spending.

• Currency exchange: Exchange USD at Taoyuan Airport on arrival (rates are reasonable), at banks in the city, or at licensed exchange bureaus. USD and THB are the easiest foreign currencies to exchange. Avoid hotel exchange desks.
• ATMs: Widely available. Convenience store ATMs at 7-Eleven and FamilyMart reliably accept foreign Visa and Mastercard. Expect a NTD 100 to 150 service fee per withdrawal, plus any fee from your home bank.
• Myanmar card situation: Most Myanmar-issued debit and credit cards will not work in Taiwan due to international banking restrictions since 2021. Plan to bring USD cash to exchange on arrival rather than relying on your Myanmar card.
• Daily budget: Budget travelers in hostels and night markets can manage NTD 1,500 to 2,000 per day. Mid-range (hotel, sit-down meals, entry fees) runs NTD 3,000 to 5,000 per day. Taiwan is moderately priced by East Asian standards.

Taiwan rewards first-time visitors with an extraordinary density of experiences packed into a compact island. A few things to plan around before you go:

• Night markets are essential: Shilin in Taipei, Fengjia in Taichung, and Liuhe in Kaohsiung are the most famous, but every town has its own. Budget NTD 200 to 400 for a full meal from stalls.
• Get an EasyCard immediately: Available at any 7-Eleven or MRT station on arrival, this rechargeable card covers Taipei metro, buses, and convenience store purchases. Return it before leaving for a partial refund.
• Base cities: Taipei is the natural starting point. Kaohsiung in the south is cheaper, sunnier, and has excellent food. Taichung is a good midpoint with strong café culture.
• Natural highlights: Taroko Gorge on the east coast, Sun Moon Lake in the central mountains, and Alishan forest railway are the classic nature stops. Book accommodation on weekends and holidays well in advance.
• Language: Mandarin is official; English is widely spoken at tourist sites, metro stations, and hotels. Traditional Chinese characters are used (not simplified).
• Best timing: October to December (autumn) brings the most stable weather. July to September is typhoon season, which can disrupt east coast travel and mountain roads.
• Cash for Myanmar travelers: Myanmar-issued bank cards are unlikely to work in Taiwan ATMs. Bring USD to exchange on arrival at Taoyuan Airport or at city banks.
