Culture & Travel Tips
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Lesotho is during the dry winter (May-September) for hiking and pony trekking with clear skies. June-August offers skiing at Afriski if snow falls. Summer (November-March) brings rain but lush green landscapes. The highlands are cold year-round - pack warm clothing.
Cultural Notes
Lesotho has a proud Basotho culture centered around the mountain kingdom identity. Traditional Basotho blankets and conical hats are distinctive. The country is predominantly Christian with traditional beliefs. Music and dance are important, and the Morija Arts & Cultural Festival in September celebrates Basotho heritage.
Insider Tips
English and Sesotho are official languages. The Loti is the currency (pegged to South African Rand, which is also accepted). Lesotho is known as the "Kingdom in the Sky" with the lowest point at 1,400m. Basotho blankets and hats are iconic cultural items. 4x4 vehicles are recommended for highland travel.
