Macau SAR (Special Administrative Region) passport holders travel on passports issued by the Macau Immigration Department, distinct from PRC passports and from Hong Kong SAR passports. Like Hong Kong SAR passports, Macau SAR passports are not eligible for the US Visa Waiver Program, and holders must apply for a B1/B2 visa for tourist or business visits to the United States.

There is no US Embassy or Consulate in Macau. Macau residents must travel to the US Consulate General in Hong Kong (26 Garden Road, Central) to submit their visa application and attend the interview. The ferry crossing from Macau to Hong Kong takes about 60 minutes; the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge also links the two regions. Plan for this travel step when scheduling your appointment.

Interview wait times at the Hong Kong Consulate are generally short, typically 10 to 30 days, which applies equally to Macau applicants who book through the same system. The same assessment criteria apply: non-immigrant intent, financial sufficiency, and purpose of visit.

Macau SAR passport holders with strong ties to Macau, such as employment in the gaming or hospitality sectors, property ownership, or family, will be in a strong position to demonstrate non-immigrant intent. The consular officer may also ask about your plans to return to Macau after your US visit.

Macau International Airport (MFM) serves regional destinations but does not have direct services to the United States. Most Macau travelers connect via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), taking advantage of Cathay Pacific's nonstop routes to Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York JFK, Chicago, and Boston. Other connection options include Singapore Airlines via Singapore, EVA Air via Taipei, Korean Air via Seoul, and ANA via Tokyo. The ferry to Hong Kong and then direct flight is the most common routing.

The United States uses the US Dollar (USD). Macau Pataca (MOP) is not accepted in the US. Exchange to USD before travel or use a Visa or Mastercard bank card that is internationally enabled. Notify your bank of travel plans to prevent transaction blocks.

The US is significantly more expensive than Macau for everyday costs. Accommodation in major US cities ranges from $150 to $400 per night for mid-range options. Dining costs are also higher.

Tipping is expected in US restaurants at 18% to 20%. This is not common in Macau outside of tourist venues, so factor it into your budget.

ATMs are widely available across the US. Expect fees of $3 to $5 per withdrawal from out-of-network machines. Credit cards are accepted almost universally.

Plan travel to Hong Kong for the interview. The ferry from Macau Outer Harbour or Taipa Ferry Terminal to Hong Kong takes around 60 minutes. Book your ferry ticket in advance and give yourself extra time around your interview appointment.

There is no US Consulate in Macau. Do not attempt to submit an application in Macau itself. The US Consulate General in Hong Kong handles all Macau applicants.

From Macau, flights to the US require connection. Macau International Airport (MFM) serves a limited number of regional routes. Most travelers connect via Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) for Cathay Pacific direct services to the US, or via other Asian hubs.

SAR passport distinction. Ensure you are applying on your Macau SAR passport. If you hold a PRC passport, you would apply through a different system and the assessment criteria may differ.
