Current Travel Situation
Kenya to Taiwan: What You Need to Know
Taiwan operates its own visa system independently from China and issues visas through its Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA). Kenyan passport holders must apply for a visitor visa in advance. Taiwan does not have a resident embassy in Kenya, operating instead through unofficial representative offices. Applications are made online via the BOCA e-Visa portal (visawebapp.boca.gov.tw), which accepts applications from Kenyan nationals. Taiwan is a major technology hub and has strong diplomatic ties with several African countries, though not with Kenya officially.
How to Get There
No direct flights connect Nairobi (NBO) to Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE). Common routings go via Bangkok (BKK) with Thai Airways or Eva Air, or via Hong Kong (HKG), Seoul (ICN), or Singapore (SIN) with China Airlines, Eva Air, or other carriers. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) to Asian hubs is an option. Total journey time is typically 16 to 22 hours depending on routing.
Money & Banking
Taiwan uses the New Taiwan dollar (NTD). ATMs are widely available and accept international Visa and Mastercard. Taiwan is excellent value: budget accommodation in Taipei from $25 per night, local night market food from $1 to $3 per item, mid-range meals from $5 to $10. The MRT (metro) and intercity high-speed rail (HSR) are affordable and efficient. 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores (over 10,000 across the island) have ATMs accepting foreign cards.
Practical Tips
Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the night markets (Shilin, Raohe), and the 101 skyscraper are top attractions. Jiufen is a hillside former mining town with teahouses, lanterns, and ocean views that inspired the Miyazaki film "Spirited Away." Taroko Gorge in eastern Taiwan is a dramatic marble canyon with hiking trails. Sun Moon Lake is Taiwan's largest body of water and surrounded by mountains. Taiwan's cuisine is outstanding: beef noodle soup, oyster vermicelli, pineapple cake, and bubble tea (invented in Taiwan). Taiwan is very safe with extremely low crime rates.
