Current Travel Situation
Kenya to Finland: What You Need to Know
Finland is a Schengen member, so a Finnish Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The Schengen fee is โฌ90 since June 2024. Finnish authorities process Schengen applications for Kenya through VFS Global in Nairobi. Finland introduced the EES biometric border registration for non-EU visitors in October 2025. Finland is the happiest country in the world according to annual rankings and offers a unique nature and design-focused tourism experience.
How to Get There
No direct flights connect Nairobi (NBO) to Helsinki Vantaa Airport (HEL). Common routings go via London (LHR) with Kenya Airways then Finnair or British Airways, or via Amsterdam (AMS) with KLM then Finnair. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) to European hubs is another option. Finnair also operates routes from several European cities. Total journey time from Nairobi to Helsinki is typically 14 to 18 hours.
Money & Banking
Finland uses the euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere. Finland is one of the more expensive Schengen destinations: budget accommodation from โฌ60 per night, restaurant meals from โฌ15 to โฌ25. Helsinki is particularly expensive by European standards. The Finnish sauna culture is ubiquitous and often free at lakeside cabins. ATMs are widely available. A cashless society means cards are used for nearly all transactions.
Practical Tips
Helsinki is a compact, walkable capital with Finnish design culture, excellent restaurants, and Market Square on the waterfront. Lapland in northern Finland is the best place to see the Northern Lights (September to March) and reindeer, and to experience a genuine Christmas-feeling winter. Summer in Finland brings the midnight sun, sailing on lakes, and berry-picking in forests. Finnish lakes (there are 188,000) offer kayaking, fishing, and cottage (mรถkki) culture. Sauna is central to Finnish identity and visitors should try the lakeside sauna experience.
