Current Travel Situation

Kenya to Croatia: What You Need to Know

Croatia became a full Schengen member in January 2023, replacing its previous national visa with the standard Schengen type. A Schengen visa for Croatia allows travel to all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Croatia has no resident embassy in Kenya, so applications are handled by the German, Austrian, or another designated Schengen country's embassy in Nairobi. Check the VFS Global website or the Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm the current representing country before applying.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Nairobi (NBO) to Croatian airports (Zagreb ZAG, Split SPU, Dubrovnik DBV). Common routes go via London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Munich (MUC), Vienna (VIE), or Amsterdam (AMS) with onward connections to Croatia. Kenya Airways links NBO to European hubs. Croatia also has good ferry connections from Italy (Split-Ancona) and overland links from Slovenia and Hungary, useful for multi-country itineraries.

Money & Banking

Croatia adopted the euro (EUR) in January 2023, replacing the kuna. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in tourist areas. Croatia's Adriatic coast peaks in July and August: budget accommodation in Dubrovnik starts around €70 to €100, while other coastal towns are more affordable. Off-season (April to June, September to October) offers better value and fewer crowds. Inland areas including Zagreb are significantly cheaper than the coast.

Practical Tips

Dubrovnik is Croatia's most famous destination, with a UNESCO-listed walled Old Town and sweeping Adriatic views. Split's old town is built within the 4th-century Diocletian's Palace. Plitvice Lakes National Park (UNESCO) has stunning turquoise cascading lakes and waterfalls. Hvar island is known for beaches, lavender fields, and nightlife. Zagreb offers a compact charming centre with a strong cafe culture. The Dalmatian coast is ideal for sailing, island-hopping by ferry, and swimming in clear Adriatic waters.
