Guam to China: What You Need to Know

China requires visas for US citizens. As a US territory with a significant military presence, Guam is an area of particular geopolitical sensitivity in US-China relations. Guam residents with US passports must apply for a Chinese visa at a Chinese Consulate, which may be in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, or through Honolulu. There is no Chinese Consulate in Guam.

How to Get There

From Guam (GUM) to Beijing (PEK) or Shanghai (PVG) via Tokyo (NRT) or Seoul (ICN) on Air China, China Eastern, or Japan Airlines. Guam is relatively close to China compared to the continental US, being only approximately 4,000 km away.

Money & Banking

China uses the Renminbi (CNY). Cash is widely necessary outside tourist areas. Mobile payments (WeChat Pay, Alipay) dominate but require Chinese accounts. ATMs at international banks accept foreign cards. Budget $50 to $100 USD per day.

Practical Tips

From Guam, the nearest Chinese Consulate is in Los Angeles, California. Plan visa applications in advance if traveling through the continental US. Beijing (PEK), Shanghai (PVG), and Guangzhou (CAN) are the main gateways. China's high-speed rail network is excellent. Download VPN apps before arrival as many Western services are blocked.
