Direct flights between Cairo and Indian cities do not currently exist, but connections through Dubai, Doha, or Abu Dhabi are frequent and typically add only 3 to 5 hours to the journey. Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad all offer well-priced connections, and booking 4 to 6 weeks ahead generally secures the best fares.

For first-time visitors, India can feel vast and initially overwhelming, but it rewards those who plan a focused itinerary. The classic entry point is Delhi, which serves as a gateway to Agra (Taj Mahal) and Rajasthan. Further south, Kerala's backwaters and Goa's beaches offer a completely different experience. For Egyptian travelers with a particular interest in Islamic heritage, cities like Lucknow, Hyderabad, and Delhi's Old City contain some of the finest Mughal and Sultanate-era monuments in the world, alongside a thriving halal food culture.

India pairs naturally with several nearby destinations, and Egyptian passport holders have reasonable access to the region:

• Nepal (visa on arrival, free for 15 days or $30 for 30 days): Kathmandu is a short 1 to 2 hour flight from Delhi. Many travelers combine a week in India with a Himalayan extension in Nepal, especially for trekking in the Annapurna or Everest regions.
• Sri Lanka (e-Visa, approx. $20, 30 days): Colombo is accessible from major Indian cities and works well as a final stop before returning home via Dubai or Doha. Tea plantations, beaches, and ancient ruins offer a very different pace from India.
• Maldives (visa-free on arrival, 30 days): Egyptian passport holders receive a free visa on arrival. A short flight from Colombo or a direct connection makes it an easy add-on for a beach ending to an India trip.
• Bhutan (requires permit, approx. $100/day SDF + $40 visa): Accessible from Paro airport with flights connecting through Delhi or Kolkata. A more expensive but unique destination for those interested in Himalayan Buddhist culture.

India uses the Indian Rupee (INR). Cards are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and urban shops, but cash is still essential for local markets, auto-rickshaws, small guesthouses, and rural areas. Withdraw INR on arrival or shortly after rather than exchanging at the airport counters, which offer poorer rates.

• ATMs: Widely available in cities and tourist areas. Most accept Visa and Mastercard. Withdrawal limits vary by bank (typically INR 10,000 to 20,000 per transaction). Foreign transaction fees apply from your Egyptian bank.
• Currency exchange: Use authorized exchange bureaus (Thomas Cook, Muthoot, local licensed dealers) in city centers. Avoid exchanging money with unlicensed street dealers. Egyptian pounds (EGP) will not be accepted; bring USD for exchange.
• Daily budget: India is very affordable by regional standards. Budget travelers can manage INR 2,500 to 3,500 per day (hostel dorm, local meals, transport). A comfortable mid-range budget is INR 5,000 to 8,000 per day (decent hotel, sit-down meals, entry fees). A full meal at a good local restaurant costs INR 200 to 600.
• UPI and digital payments: Locals use UPI apps (PhonePe, Google Pay) for nearly everything, but these require an Indian phone number. As a tourist, cash and cards are your practical options.
• Tipping: Not obligatory but appreciated. Round up taxi fares, tip hotel staff INR 50 to 100, and add 10% at restaurants that do not include a service charge.

India rewards those who plan a structured itinerary rather than trying to cover too much ground. A few practical notes before you go:

• Golden Triangle as a starting point: Delhi (3 days), Agra for the Taj Mahal (1 to 2 days), and Jaipur (2 days) form the most visited circuit and are well connected by train and road. Book Taj Mahal entry tickets online in advance.
• Get a local SIM immediately: Airtel and Jio both offer tourist SIMs at airports. Cheap data and calls make navigation, Uber/Ola bookings, and communication much easier. Bring your Egyptian passport for registration.
• Train travel: Indian Railways is one of the best ways to travel between cities. Book at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead on irctc.co.in or through apps like Cleartrip. Air-conditioned classes (3A, 2A) are comfortable for overnight journeys.
• Water and food safety: Drink only bottled or filtered water throughout India. Street food is excellent but start slowly and choose busy stalls with high turnover.
• Halal food: Widely available across India. Mughlai cuisine (biryani, kebabs, korma) is exceptional in Delhi, Lucknow, and Hyderabad. Look for restaurants displaying halal certification.
• Bargaining: Expected at markets and with auto-rickshaw drivers who refuse to use meters. Agree on a price before getting in.
• Best season for Egypt travelers: October to March is the most comfortable time to visit most of India. Summers (April to June) are extreme in the north; the monsoon (July to September) brings heavy rain to most regions.
