Mexico reinstated the visa requirement for Dominican Republic nationals on October 22, 2021, after revoking a previous visa waiver due to a significant increase in irregular migration attempts through Mexico toward the United States. A large Dominican diaspora lives in the United States, and many Dominicans previously used Mexico as a transit corridor. Despite the visa requirement, Mexico remains a popular destination for Dominican travelers, particularly for Cancun and the Riviera Maya, which are reachable on direct budget flights from Santo Domingo.

Aeromexico operates direct flights from Santo Domingo (SDQ) to Mexico City (MEX) with journey times of approximately 4 hours. For Cancun (CUN), Arajet, Volaris, and Viva Aerobus offer direct flights from SDQ in around 3 hours. Copa Airlines and Avianca connect SDQ to MEX via Panama City and Bogota respectively. From Punta Cana (PUJ), Arajet and Viva Aerobus also fly directly to Cancun. Within Mexico, the Tren Maya (train) and ADO luxury buses connect Cancun to Tulum, Merida, Playa del Carmen, and other Yucatan Peninsula destinations at low cost.

Mexico uses the Mexican Peso (MXN). Avoid airport exchange booths and use casas de cambio in city centres or bank ATMs for better rates. ATMs (cajeros automaticos) are widely available in cities and resort areas. Use bank-affiliated ATMs inside branches or major shopping malls for security, and notify your Dominican bank before traveling to avoid card blocks. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops. American Express is less commonly accepted. Carry some cash for tips, street food, markets, and smaller vendors. Tipping is customary: 10 to 15% in restaurants, and small amounts for hotel staff and tour guides. Try to break large 500 or 1,000 MXN notes at bigger establishments. Budget around MXN 800 to 2,000 per day (approximately $45 to $115 USD) for mid-range travel.
