Nepal is one of the Himalayan kingdoms bordering Tibet (China) and India, home to eight of the world's ten highest mountains including Mount Everest (8,849m). Australian citizens are among the most frequent visitors to Nepal, drawn by world-class trekking (Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang), mountaineering, rafting, and wildlife safaris in Chitwan National Park. Nepal is consistently ranked among the most affordable destinations globally. Nepal has deep spiritual significance as the birthplace of the Buddha (Lumbini) and as a centre of Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu culture. Kathmandu Valley contains seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a short radius.

No direct Australia-Nepal flights exist. The most convenient connections are via Singapore (Singapore Airlines or Scoot, SYD/MEL-SIN then SIN-KTM), via Bangkok (Qantas/Thai Airways, SYD/MEL-BKK then BKK-KTM), or via Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia Airlines, SYD/MEL-KUL then KUL-KTM). Qatar Airways and other Middle Eastern carriers connect via Doha. Himalaya Airlines, Biman Bangladesh, and IndiGo connect via various Asian hubs. Total journey time from Sydney to Kathmandu is approximately 14-20 hours.

Nepal uses the Nepalese rupee (NPR), fixed at NPR 160 = USD 1 approximately. Nepal is extraordinarily affordable for Australians: budget USD 30-60 per day covers comfortable guesthouses, local meals, and transport. ATMs in Kathmandu and Pokhara dispense NPR but can be unreliable in remote areas, so bring USD cash for trekking regions. Credit cards work in Kathmandu's tourist areas but not on trekking routes. Budget trekkers can live very cheaply (USD 15-20 per day including guesthouse and food on popular routes).

Mount Everest Base Camp trek (14-18 days round trip from Kathmandu or Lukla) is the world's most famous trek, passing through the Khumbu valley and Sherpa villages. Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp treks (7-21 days) offer extraordinary mountain scenery through diverse landscapes. Pokhara (6-hour bus from Kathmandu or 25-min flight) is Nepal's second city and gateway to the Annapurna region, with Phewa Lake views of the Annapurna range. Kathmandu's heritage: Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Boudhanath stupa, Pashupatinath temple (major Hindu cremation site), and Durbar Squares. Chitwan National Park (lowland terai) offers rhino and tiger safaris. Lumbini in the western terai is the birthplace of the Buddha.
