Current Travel Situation

Afghanistan to Taiwan: What You Need to Know

Taiwan operates its own immigration system independently from mainland China. Afghan passport holders must apply for a visitor visa through the BOCA e-Visa portal (visawebapp.boca.gov.tw). Taiwan does not have a resident embassy in Afghanistan or Pakistan, but accepts online applications from most nationalities. The visitor visa costs approximately $68 (TWD 2,200) and allows up to 90 days. Taiwan is a major technology hub with world-class night markets and outdoor scenery. Processing is done entirely online and approved visas are presented at arrival.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Taiwan. Route via Bangkok (BKK) with Thai Airways or Eva Air to Taipei Taoyuan (TPE), or via Hong Kong (HKG) then onward. Via Seoul (ICN) with China Airlines or Korean Air is another option. From Islamabad or Dubai, route through Asian hub cities. Total journey time from Kabul is typically 14 to 20 hours.

Money & Banking

Taiwan uses the New Taiwan dollar (NTD). ATMs are widely available and accept international Visa and Mastercard. Taiwan is excellent value: budget accommodation from $25 per night, night market food from $1 to $3 per item, mid-range meals from $5 to $10. 7-Eleven and FamilyMart convenience stores (over 10,000 across Taiwan) have ATMs accepting foreign cards. The MRT and high-speed rail (HSR) are affordable and efficient for getting around.

Practical Tips

Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Shilin Night Market, and the 101 skyscraper are top attractions. Jiufen is a hilltop former gold mining town with tea houses and ocean views. Taroko Gorge in eastern Taiwan is a dramatic marble canyon with hiking trails. Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan. Taiwan's cuisine is outstanding: beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, oyster vermicelli, pineapple cake, and bubble tea (invented in Taiwan). Taiwan is generally very safe with low crime rates.
