The MRT and high-speed rail (HSR) are affordable and efficient for getting around.

Taipei's Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Shilin Night Market, and the 101 skyscraper are top attractions. Jiufen is a hilltop former gold mining town with tea houses and ocean views. Taroko Gorge in eastern Taiwan is a dramatic marble canyon with hiking trails. Sun Moon Lake is the largest body of water in Taiwan. Taiwan's cuisine is outstanding: beef noodle soup, scallion pancakes, oyster vermicelli, pineapple cake, and bubble tea (invented in Taiwan). Taiwan is generally very safe with low crime rates.
