Current Travel Situation

Afghanistan to Switzerland: What You Need to Know

Switzerland is a Schengen member but not an EU member, joining the Schengen Area in December 2008. A Swiss Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries. Switzerland replaced TLScontact with VFS Global in July 2025 for visa application centres in many countries. The Swiss Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in August 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Swiss Embassy in Islamabad or the Swiss Consulate in Dubai. Switzerland is one of Europe's most expensive countries, and financial proof requirements are correspondingly higher. The Schengen fee is €90 since June 2024.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Switzerland. Route via Dubai (DXB) with Emirates then Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) or Edelweiss Air to Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA). Via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then SWISS to Zurich is another option. From Islamabad, route through Gulf hubs then onward to Switzerland. Zurich Airport is a major European hub with excellent rail connections to the city centre (8 minutes) and beyond. Total journey time from Kabul is typically 12 to 18 hours.

Money & Banking

Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), one of the world's strongest currencies. Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere. Switzerland is consistently one of the most expensive countries in the world: budget accommodation from CHF 50 ($56) per night in hostels, meals from CHF 20 to 35 ($22 to $39) in mid-range restaurants. Zurich and Geneva are especially expensive. The Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats and is excellent value for multi-day exploration. ATMs dispense CHF.

Practical Tips

Zurich is a world-class city with excellent museums (Kunsthaus), the old town Altstadt on the lake, and access to nearby Alps skiing. Geneva hosts international organisations (UN, Red Cross) with a cosmopolitan character. The Bernese Oberland (Interlaken, Jungfraujoch) offers spectacular Alpine scenery with Europe's highest railway station at 3,454m. The Matterhorn near Zermatt is Switzerland's most iconic mountain. Lucerne has a beautiful preserved old town and lake. The Aletsch Glacier is the largest in the Alps (UNESCO). Swiss trains are legendary for punctuality and scenic routes.
