Afghanistan to Portugal: What You Need to Know

Portugal is a Schengen member: a Portuguese Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. The Schengen fee is €90 since June 2024. The Portuguese Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in August 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Portuguese Embassy in Islamabad or the Portuguese Consulate in Dubai. Portugal has historic connections to the Islamic world through the Moorish presence in the Iberian Peninsula from the 8th to 15th centuries, and Portuguese cities retain significant Islamic architectural heritage. Applicants should document strong ties to their current country of residence.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Portugal. Route via Dubai (DXB) with flydubai or Emirates then TAP Air Portugal or another carrier to Lisbon (LIS), or via Islamabad (ISB) through Gulf hubs then onward to Portugal. Via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then TAP or Iberia to Lisbon is another option. Total journey time from Kabul to Lisbon is typically 14 to 20 hours.

Money & Banking

Portugal uses the euro (EUR). Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted. Portugal is one of western Europe's more affordable destinations: budget meals €8 to €12, mid-range restaurants €15 to €25. Lisbon and Porto have good public transport. Tipping 10 percent is appreciated. Budget hostels from €25 per night. ATMs are widely available. Portugal is generally excellent value compared to western European neighbours.
