Afghanistan to Poland: What You Need to Know

Poland is a Schengen member: a Polish Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries. The Schengen fee is €90 since June 2024. The Polish Embassy in Kabul suspended operations after August 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Polish Embassy in Islamabad or the Polish Consulate in Dubai. Poland joined the EU and Schengen in 2004 and has the largest economy in Central Europe. Warsaw's rebuilt Old Town (UNESCO) and Krakow's medieval centre attract millions of visitors. Poland uses the zloty, not the euro, making it more affordable than many Schengen countries.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Poland. Route via Dubai (DXB) then LOT Polish Airlines to Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW), or via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then LOT or another carrier. From Islamabad, connect through Gulf hubs. Warsaw is a major hub with connections to other Polish cities. Total journey time from Kabul is typically 12 to 16 hours.

Money & Banking

Poland uses the Polish zloty (PLN), not the euro. This makes Poland one of the most affordable Schengen destinations: Warsaw accommodation from PLN 80 to 150 ($20 to $37) per night in budget options, meals from PLN 30 to 60 ($7 to $15). Krakow is particularly affordable. Visa and Mastercard are accepted widely. ATMs are available throughout. Poland is excellent value for Western European standards.

Practical Tips

Krakow's Old Town (UNESCO) is Poland's most visited city, with Wawel Castle, St. Mary's Church, and the Cloth Hall market. Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp memorial (UNESCO) near Krakow is a sobering and essential visit. Warsaw's rebuilt Old Town (UNESCO) was reconstructed brick by brick after 85 percent destruction in WWII. The Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow (UNESCO) has underground chapels carved entirely from salt. Gdansk is a Hanseatic city on the Baltic with excellent amber markets. Polish cuisine: pierogi, bigos, zurek soup.
