Afghanistan to Norway: What You Need to Know

Norway is a Schengen member despite not being an EU member. A Norwegian Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries. The Schengen fee is €90 since June 2024. The Norwegian Embassy in Kabul suspended operations after August 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad or the Norwegian Consulate in Dubai. Norway has one of the largest Afghan diaspora communities in Scandinavia, with significant Afghan communities in Oslo, Bergen, and other cities following refugee resettlement from the 1990s onwards.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Norway. Route via Dubai (DXB) then Norwegian Air or SAS to Oslo Gardermoen (OSL), or via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then SAS or Norwegian. From Islamabad, connect through Gulf hubs. Oslo Airport has a fast rail link to the city centre (20 minutes). Total journey time from Kabul is typically 12 to 18 hours.

Money & Banking

Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK). Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere. Norway is consistently one of the world's most expensive countries: Oslo accommodation from NOK 500 to 800 ($47 to $75) per night in budget options, restaurant meals from NOK 200 to 400 ($19 to $37). Norway's natural attractions (fjords, mountains, Northern Lights) are largely free. ATMs are widely available but cash is rarely used. Norway is almost entirely cashless.

Practical Tips

Norway's fjords are a UNESCO World Heritage landscape: Sognefjord (Norway's longest at 204 km) and Geirangerfjord are the most famous. The Northern Lights are best seen in Tromso, Lofoten, and other northern areas from September to March. Bergen is a charming Hanseatic trading city with the historic Bryggen wharf (UNESCO). Oslo has the Viking Ship Museum, the Munch Museum (The Scream), and excellent restaurants. The Lofoten Islands offer dramatic mountain-meets-sea scenery. Norway has a large Afghan community particularly in Oslo and surrounding areas.
