Japan Visa RequirementsFor Afghanistan passport holders

Afghan citizens require a visa to visit Japan, costing approximately $30 (JPY 3,000). The key challenge is that most foreign embassies in Kabul, including Japan's, have suspended or severely limited consular services since August 2021. Afghan applicants typically need to apply at a Japanese embassy in a third country.

Current Travel Situation

Afghanistan to Japan: What You Need to Know

Japan suspended normal embassy operations in Kabul following the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021. The Japanese Embassy in Kabul maintains very limited activity if any. Afghan citizens seeking a Japanese tourist or business visa must typically travel to a third country where a Japanese embassy operates, such as Islamabad (Pakistan), Dubai (UAE), Tashkent (Uzbekistan), or Dushanbe (Tajikistan). Japan maintains its standard tourist visa requirements for Afghan nationals. The Japanese visa fee is JPY 3,000 (~$20) for single-entry and JPY 6,000 (~$40) for multiple-entry.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Kabul (KBL) or other Afghan airports to Japan. Afghan travelers typically route via Dubai (DXB) with flydubai or Ariana Afghan Airlines to DXB then Emirates or other carriers to Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND). Via Islamabad (ISB) with Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) then connecting through Doha (DOH) or another hub is another option. Alternatively, route via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then connect. Total journey time is at least 14 to 20 hours from the region.

Money & Banking

Japan uses the Japanese yen (JPY). ATMs accepting international cards are available at 7-Eleven, Japan Post, and Aeon convenience stores, which are found everywhere. Japan is predominantly cash-based despite being technologically advanced, so carrying JPY is essential. Visa and Mastercard work at international-ATM-compatible machines. Japan is moderately expensive: budget accommodation (capsule hotels, hostels) from JPY 2,500 to 4,000 ($17 to $27), ramen and local meals from JPY 800 to 1,500 ($5 to $10). IC Cards (Suica, Pasmo) for transit are very convenient.

Practical Tips

Japan offers extraordinary cultural depth: Tokyo's electric districts (Shinjuku, Akihabara, Harajuku) blend modernity and tradition. Kyoto has over 1,600 Buddhist temples, traditional geisha districts, and bamboo groves. Mount Fuji, visible from Tokyo on clear days, is Japan's highest peak and most iconic image. Osaka is Japan's food capital with takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and kushikatsu. Hiroshima's Peace Memorial is a profound historical site. Japan's bullet trains (shinkansen) connect cities at 320 km/h. Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) and autumn foliage (October to November) are the most beautiful times to visit.
