Current Travel Situation

Afghanistan to Hungary: What You Need to Know

Hungary is a Schengen member: a Hungarian Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries. The Schengen fee is €90 since June 2024. The Hungarian Embassy in Kabul suspended operations after 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Islamabad or the Hungarian Consulate in Dubai. Hungary has a well-documented Afghan diaspora, particularly following the 2015 refugee crisis when many Afghans passed through Hungary. Budapest is a popular destination for its thermal baths, stunning architecture, and more affordable prices than Western European capitals.

How to Get There

No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Hungary. Route via Dubai (DXB) then Wizz Air or another carrier to Budapest Ferenc Liszt Airport (BUD), or via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then Wizz Air or LOT. From Islamabad, connect through Gulf hubs. Total journey time is typically 12 to 16 hours.

Money & Banking

Hungary uses the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro. This makes Hungary more affordable than eurozone neighbours: meals from HUF 3,000 to 6,000 ($8 to $17), accommodation from HUF 8,000 ($22) per night. ATMs dispense HUF throughout the country. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Budapest has excellent public transport. Tipping around 10 percent is customary in restaurants.

Practical Tips

Budapest's Chain Bridge, Parliament Building on the Danube, and Castle Hill (UNESCO) are iconic. Budapest has more thermal baths than any other capital: Szechenyi, Gellert, and Rudas are the most famous. The ruin bar scene in the Jewish Quarter is unique. Lake Balaton is Central Europe's largest lake. The Danube Bend north of Budapest has medieval castle ruins and river scenery. Hungarian cuisine features goulash, langos, and chimney cake (kurtos kalacs).
