How to Get There

In early 2025, Aeroflot resumed limited SVO-HKG service which can connect from Kabul via Moscow. Via Bangkok (BKK) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL) then onward is another option. Total journey time from Kabul is typically 10 to 16 hours.

Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), pegged to the USD at approximately 7.78 HKD = $1. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, shopping centres, and restaurants. The Octopus card covers MTR (metro), buses, ferries, and many shops. Hong Kong is expensive: budget guesthouses from HKD 300 ($38) per night in Kowloon, local cha chaan teng (Hong Kong cafe) meals from HKD 40 ($5). Notify your bank before travel.
Practical Tips
Victoria Peak offers the most famous view of Hong Kong's skyline and harbour. The Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour is one of the world's best cheap experiences at HKD 3 to 4. Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and the Avenue of Stars have excellent night views. Temple Street Night Market and Mong Kok Ladies Market are popular for shopping. Lantau Island has the Giant Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Hong Kong's dim sum breakfast culture (yum cha) and Cantonese seafood are outstanding. Cantonese is the main local language; English is widely understood.
