Current Travel Situation
Afghanistan to Denmark: What You Need to Know
Denmark is a Schengen member: a Danish Schengen visa grants access to all 27 Schengen countries. The Schengen fee is โฌ90 since June 2024. The Danish Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in 2021. Afghan nationals apply at the Danish Embassy in Islamabad or the Danish Consulate in Dubai. Denmark serves as Schengen representative for Iceland in some countries. Denmark has a significant Afghan diaspora, particularly in Copenhagen, Aarhus, and Odense, following waves of Afghan refugees who arrived in the 1990s and 2000s. The Danish Embassy in Islamabad is also the go-to mission for Greenland and Faroe Islands questions.
How to Get There
No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Denmark. Route via Dubai (DXB) then SAS or another carrier to Copenhagen Kastrup Airport (CPH), or via Istanbul (IST) with Turkish Airlines then SAS or another carrier. From Islamabad, connect through Gulf hubs. Copenhagen is excellent for rail connections to Sweden (20 minutes to Malmo), Germany, and Norway. Total journey time from Kabul to Copenhagen is typically 10 to 16 hours.
Money & Banking
Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro. Denmark is one of the more expensive Schengen destinations: Copenhagen accommodation from DKK 300 ($43) in budget hostels, restaurant meals from DKK 150 ($21). However, the Danish smรธrrebrรธd lunch tradition and street food at Torvehallerne Market offer good value. ATMs are widely available. Visa and Mastercard are accepted everywhere. Denmark is highly cashless, with card payment used for virtually all transactions.
Practical Tips
Copenhagen's Nyhavn harbour with colourful 17th-century townhouses is one of Europe's most iconic scenes. Tivoli Gardens, the world's second-oldest amusement park, is right in central Copenhagen. The Little Mermaid statue is a famous landmark. The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art north of the city is world-class. Denmark has a large Afghan community particularly in Copenhagen, Odense, and Aarhus, with Afghan restaurants and cultural organisations established throughout the country. Legoland in Billund is a popular family attraction. Denmark is home to the LEGO brick, which originated here.
