Afghanistan to Australia: What You Need to Know
Australia requires a visa for Afghan passport holders. The Australian Embassy in Kabul suspended operations in August 2021. Afghan nationals apply online through the ImmiAccount portal (immi.homeaffairs.gov.au) for the Tourist visa (subclass 600), which allows stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months depending on the grant. The cost is AUD 190. Australia applies a "genuine temporary entrant" test: applicants must demonstrate strong reasons to return to their country of residence after the visit. Afghan passport holders may face a more rigorous assessment. Many Afghans with connections to Australia apply with the support of Australian-based family or friends.
How to Get There
No direct flights connect Afghan airports to Australia. The most practical route is via Dubai (DXB) with flydubai or via Islamabad (ISB) to DXB then Emirates to Melbourne (MEL), Sydney (SYD), or Brisbane (BNE). Alternatively route via Singapore (SIN), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), or Doha (DOH) with onward connections. Total journey time from Kabul is at least 18 to 24 hours including connections.
Money & Banking
Australia uses the Australian dollar (AUD). Visa and Mastercard are universally accepted. Australia is one of the more expensive destinations: budget accommodation from AUD 30 to 60 in hostels, mid-range hotels from AUD 120 per night. Meals in restaurants from AUD 15 to 25. ATMs are widely available. Tipping is not expected in Australia but appreciated for exceptional service. Sydney and Melbourne are among the world's most livable but expensive cities.
Practical Tips
Sydney offers the Opera House (UNESCO), Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach, and excellent restaurants. Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital with coffee culture, street art (Hosier Lane), and the Great Ocean Road nearby. The Great Barrier Reef off Queensland is one of the world's natural wonders (UNESCO). Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the Northern Territory is sacred to the Anangu people and one of Australia's most iconic landscapes. The Whitsundays offer island sailing. Australia has extraordinary wildlife: kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and the platypus. The country has a warm and multicultural society with communities from across the world.
